As we progress into the World Cup, it’s Sri Lanka going up against New Zealand at Sophia Gardena, Cardiff. Sri Lanka is coming into the tournament as underdogs whereas the Kiwis are among the red hot favourites to win the World Cup.
The Kiwis love playing as underdogs, but this time with the star power they have in their side, every team will be looking to go hard against them. On the other hand, like past, the Sri Lankan team has arrived at this World Cup unfancied. It will be interesting to see how they play in this tournament.
This team posses star batsmen in their squad with some hard-hitting all-rounders and some brisk bowlers. With Trent Boult swinging the white bowl into the batsman, and Kane Williamson scoring some good runs, the team looks well balanced. They have good all-rounders like James Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme.
Though there are a couple of minor injuries within the team with Henry Nicholas still unfit and Tim Southee battling a non-serious niggle of his own, the team might play with a couple of changes.
Probable XI for NZ:
Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham (wk), James Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee/Ish Sodhi, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson.
Except for Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan team does lack some experienced players in their squad. They do have a psychological advantage over the Kiwis, as they defeated them twice in the Champion Trophy at the same venue they’ll be playing tomorrow. In the batting department, a lot will be expected from Kusal Perera as he will play an essential role for the team in this World Cup.
With Isuru Udana’s recent form, the team will have to pick between him and Suranga Lakmal as the second seam bowler alongside Malinga. Talking about the all-rounders, Dhananjaya and Jeevan Mendis will play a vital role in this tournament.
Probable XI for Sri Lanka
Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera (wk), Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera, Isaura Udana, Nuwan Pradeep/Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga
Dream XI Prediction:
- Wicket-Keeper: Kusal Perera, Tom Latham
- Batsmen: Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kane Williamson (C), Ross Taylor
- All-rounders: Thisara Perera (VC), Mitchell Santner
- Bowlers: Lasith Malinga, Isuru Udana, Trent Boult
The pitch at Cardiff tends to help the seamers at the start and slows down as the match goes on, which would bring the spinners into the game. The team winning the toss might choose to chase if they don’t play spinners in their eleven.
