Andre Roberson has been away from the game for more than a year now due to the injured left patellar tendon. He has been working on his return for quite some time, but there has been no official time table for his comeback.
Last month, Billy Donovan was asked about Roberson’s return. Below is what he had to say:
Roberson was offered a 3-year $30 million contract back in 2017 by the Oklahoma City Thunder even after knowing about his offensive limitations. This offer was made because Roberson made the thunder team better on the defensive end. He had exceptional defensive skills and even made it to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2017.
There is no doubt Roberson was an essential asset to the Thunder team. However, the question of the hour is that where do we see him in the current Thunder scenario?
The Thunder has been one of the best defensive teams in the league this year. With Paul George and Russel Westbrook guarding the wings, Steven Adams has taken care of the paint effectively.
Also, Terrance Ferguson has replaced Roberson in the team. He has been exceptional on the defensive end and has been knocking down a few long-range shots as well. With him, Dennis Schröder gives them that extra spark needed off the bench.
The Thunder team looks a strong contender right now and even if Roberson makes a return sometime soon, where do you guys seem him playing on the team?
His return to the starting lineup is questionable, and so are his abilities. He might not be the same player he was on the defensive end. With limited offensive skills, his degrading defence might make him a liability rather than an asset.
In my views, Roberson will be let go by the Thunder management after the end of the season. There is no point the Thunder are making a bet on Roberson again.
