The Boston Celtics beat one of the best defensive teams in the NBA, Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday. They looked like a championship team on both the ends of the floor.
Keeping Russel Westbrook quite, and great clutch plays by the Celtics’ team were few of the highlights of the game. However, Kyrie Irving had a significant role to play in the game with his 30 points and 11 assists. He executed great plays down the wire which took them over the line.
Kyrie Irving after the game:
“We’re feeling good. We’re feeling good. We’ve just gotta keep it up.”
Kyrie is averaging 23.8 points, dishing out seven assists and grabbing 4.9 rebounds per game. He is also producing 1.7 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.
These stats are better than his career stats which are- 22.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.3 blocks.
His field goal percentage has also increased to 50.3% this season.
According to Basketball reference, Kyrie Irving is averaging more than 20 points per game and having a true shooting percentage of over 60% for his second straight season. There are only two other Boston Celtics’ players to do that multiple times, Larry Brid and Kevin McHale. If Kyrie maintains the same numbers till the end of the season, he will enter the Celtics’ history books and join these greats.
Kevin McHale has achieved such stats five times back to back from 1986 to 1990, whereas Larry Bird has done it twice in the 1987 and 1988 seasons. The only other Celtics’ player to come close is Isaiah Thomas who had the same stats in the 2017 season.
Kyrie had already started writing chapters for the Boston Celtics. However, how much far can he take this team this season is still a big question mark.
