The moment Anthony Davis requested a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans, everybody in the NBA world was moved from their seats. And why wouldn’t we? This trade has the potential to reshape the structure of the NBA.
Speculations of him joining the Lakers were flocking all over the internet even before the official statement of his parting was made. However, if we look into his trade scenario closely, two teams have the maximum chance to land Davis- Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.
Let’s take them one by one:
The Boston Celtics can’t aim for Davis before the end of this season because of the “Derrick Rose Rule” which forces them not to play Kyrie and Davis on the same team. However, they can aim for him at the end of this season, giving away Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown and few draft pics.
If Davis does not get traded till the end of the season, and we are hoping he would not, the Celtics have the highest chance of landing him up as they have the best resource to give.
The Lakers can get Davis before the February trade deadline. They have all the resources and the amenities needed to land him at LA. However, if they miss this trade deadline and aim for him at the end of the season, they might lose him to the other teams especially the Boston Celtics.
They will have to give away Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, few draft pics and even more. But this would be worth placing Davis alongside Lebron James in the same team.
If Lakers miss the February deadline, they will face stiff competition from the Celtics. The Celtics have Jayson Tatum to give, who is the number one guy, whereas Lakers’ Brandon Ingram is definitely the number two guy, not a better resource than Tatum.
The Pelicans will have to make a tough choice here. But in my views, they will wait it out till the end of the season and weigh their option then.
